Quick tips to improve your resume

If your very average resume is crying out for help, check out some easy ways to spruce it up. There are some really simple changes you can make to get your resume to stand out from the crowd and land yourself an interview.

  • Resume length Even if you have years and years of experience, keep it to a maximum of 2 pages.
  • Keep the format simple – If potential employers only have a short time to read your resume, it needs to be clear and easy to read. Use bullet points and a professional font.
  • Proofread – Always undergo several rounds of proofreading to make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to review your resume as simple grammatical mistakes might be the factor that makes or breaks your employment opportunity.
  • Focus on accomplishments – What special things did you do in each job? Out of my list of tips this could make the most impact as it can set you apart from other candidates. Identify what challenges you overcame or results from your efforts that the company really benefited from.
  • Include the most important information first – If your resume begins with old or irrelevant information such as experience from more than 10 years ago, then it may distract potential employers from the key information.
  • Customise your resume to the job ad – Often employers review resumes extremely quickly so if they only take a quick glance at it, then you need to ensure that you grasp their attention straight away. Focus on key strengths that are required to meet the job criteria. The closer your resume matches the job advert, the better your chances are to be selected for an interview.
